A good metal fabrication shop should always look out for newer ways to perform different tasks during the fabrication process. This article discusses how a glow-discharge plasma machine can be helpful during surface cleaning or treatment during metal fabrication. Use this information to make an informed decision about the suitability of this technology in your fabrication shop. Surface Degreasing Glow discharge plasmas use a low current to heat air particles until they release their ions. Those ions move towards the material that is being cleaned and cause it to become hot. That resultant heat can cause any grease that was used during previous fabrication stages, such as sheet metal bending, to melt. The material therefore becomes clean and dry once the glow discharge plasma has vaporised the grease. This makes the product to be ready for delivery to the client in a shorter time than it would take other surface cleaning methods, such as using an acid bath. Surface Passivation Some metal fabrication processes require the surface of the product to be rendered inactive. For instance, your client may require his or her zinc components to be passivized so that they form an oxide layer on their surface. The glow-discharge plasma machine can do this very well by heating oxygen gas within the plasma chamber. The ions released form an oxide layer on the surface of the components to the passivisation standard requested by the client. Removal of Oxide Layers Some situations may require you to remove the oxide layer from a material before further fabrication processes, such as powder coating, can be done. This objective can also be achieved by using the glow discharge plasma. This can be done by increasing the heat inside the plasma chamber so that the oxide layer on the surface of the material melts away. The fabricator can use an inert gas, such as argon, during this process so that little or no oxygen is allowed to react with the material. Removal of Particulate Deposits Metal particles may have become embedded in the surface of the component that has just been fabricated. Such particles can accelerate corrosion or cause the material to crack later on. Those particulates can be removed by heating the component using glow discharge plasmas. Corrosion Types That Can Occur On Steel and How to Deal With the Corrosion

Stainless steel is typically corrosion resistant and holds up well in most environments. However, there is a limit of the corrosion resistance of any given stainless steel depending on its constituent elements, which means that every grade will have a slightly variant response when exposed to corrosive environments. For this reason, you need to be careful when selecting the grades of stainless steel for different applications in your home or workplace. To help you reduce the likelihood of corrosion and staining, here are forms of steel corrosion you should know and ways you can avoid them:  Pitting Corrosion Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a surface film or layer of chromium oxide on contact with oxygen. This layer is passive because it makes the surface of the stainless steel to lose its chemical reactivity.  However, chemicals especially those with chloride ions, found in everyday materials like bleach and salt can attack this passive layer, allowing corrosion to start. This type of corrosion, known as pitting corrosion, refers to a local break in this passive layer that can be provoked by electrolytes rich in chlorides. To prevent this corrosion, keep your stainless steel material away from prolonged contact with chemicals. However, in the event that a pitting hazard is known, for instance, where both stainless steel and chlorides will be in contact, choose a grade of steel such as molybdenum-bearing stainless steel that will be more resistant to the chemical attack.  Galvanic Corrosion Galvanic or bimetallic corrosion can occur when dissimilar metals come into contact in common electrolytes such as water or other solutions, setting up a galvanic cell. If there is a flow of current between the two, the anode, the less noble metal, will corrode at a faster rate than it would have had the metals not come into contact (a noble metal is one that is resistant to oxidation and corrosion in moist air). The rate of corrosion will also depend on factors such as the composition and temperature of the electrolyte, and the areas of the metals that are in contact. Greater attack on the anode will occur with larger areas of the cathode (more noble metal). Therefore, avoid carbon steel bolts in any stainless steel member because the ratio of the stainless steel area to that of the carbon steel will be large, meaning that the carbon steel bolts will be subject to aggressive corrosion or attack. Alternatively, you can use non-metallic insulators like rubber to separate the metals. Crevice Corrosion Stainless steel needs an oxygen supply to ensure that the passive layer forms on its surface. Therefore, tight crevices hinder oxygen access to the stainless steel, making it vulnerable to attack.
